In this workshop, attendees will learn how to set up a Joomla site. Educators can use Joomla to have their own website. In this workshop, you will set up a local server using your laptop computer as the host.

  1. Introduction to Joomla ( 5 minutes)
    1. Exploring the Joomla.org website

      3. Documentation
      4. Download Joomla
      5. Extensions
      6. Themes
  1. Downloading the necessary ingredients (10 minutes)
    1. Download the latest version of Joomla (joomla.org)
    2. Download the latest version of WAMP5 (http://www.wampserver.com/en/download.php)
    3. Download FTP software ( http://filezilla-project.org/index.php )
  2. Installing WAMP5 & Joomla (15 minutes)
    1. Installing WAMP5 locally
    2. Uncompressing and moving Joomla files to \WAMP\www folder
  3. Creating a MySql Database (15 minutes)
    1. Using the WAMP5 menu to go to phpMyAdmin
    2. Name and create a database
    3. Assigning privileges
  4. Installing Joomla (15 minutes)
    1. Opening your web browser and going to localhost/Joomla/
    2. Checking PHP settings, locating database w/ login information
    3. Run install
    4. Remove Installation folder
    5. Login as administrator
    6. Frontpage settings
  5. Getting started (30 minutes)
    1. Using sample data to help you get started
    2. Changing sections, category, articles
    3. Adding/Changing/Deleting articles
      1. Images
      2. Video – To embed or not to embed that is the question
  6. Finding additional Extensions & Adding 3rd party extensions to your site (45 minutes)
    1. Searching Joomla.org
    2. Downloading extensions
    3. Installing extensions
    4. Using your new extensions
  7. Time to play (15 minutes)
    1. Explore and ask questions while you work
